Garden State Guardian Vets

Vet-owned since 2011. Nobody here has a sales target.

Dr. Priya Raman spent four years at a corporate practice where the rule was: don't discuss cost until the treatment is done. She opened this clinic to do the opposite.

So the estimate comes first. It's written, itemized, and signed by you before we start. If something changes mid-procedure we stop and call. If the bill and the sheet ever disagree, the sheet wins.

We're one clinic on Bloomfield Ave with two vets, two licensed technicians and a manager who has been here since 2013. Most of our clients found us because someone at the dog park told them to.

Three things you can hold us to

A written estimate, first
For anything beyond the exam. Line by line, signed by you. The estimate is the bill.
Same-day sick visits
Slots held open every weekday and released at 8 am. Call by 3 pm and you're seen today.
Low-stress handling
Floor exams for nervous dogs, a separate quiet room for cats, treats throughout, and pre-visit medication when it helps.

The people

  • Dr. Priya Raman

    Dr. Priya Raman, DVM

Owner and lead veterinarian. Here since 2011.

Cornell '09. Opened the clinic in 2011 after four years at a corporate practice where she wasn't allowed to tell clients what things cost until after. That's the whole reason the estimate is on the front page. Lives in Glen Ridge with a one-eyed tabby called Admiral.

  • Dr. Marcus Bell

    Dr. Marcus Bell, DVM

    Associate veterinarian. Here since 2018.

Penn Vet '15. Does most of the surgery and all of the dental x-ray reading. Will call you the morning after a procedure himself. Has a retired greyhound named Pilot who is faster than he is.

  • Elena Costa

    Elena Costa

    Practice manager. Here since 2013.

Runs the front desk, the schedule and the estimates. If a number on your invoice doesn't match the sheet you signed, Elena is who fixes it, and it comes out of our side.

  • Jordan Nkemelu

    Jordan Nkemelu, LVT

    Veterinary technician. Here since 2020.

Licensed technician and the person monitoring anesthesia during every surgery. Trained in low-stress handling; the reason nervous dogs get their exam on the floor instead of the table.

  • Sam Whitaker

    Sam Whitaker, LVT

    Veterinary technician. Here since 2022.

Runs the in-house lab and takes most of the x-rays. Cat person, and it shows: cats are handled in the quiet room with a towel and no rush.
